When I first began making jewellery, I could not have known exactly where it would lead. More than ten years later, Corky & Stoner has grown into a wide and colourful collection of rings, necklaces, bracelets and earrings, all handmade in Yorkshire.

The styles may have developed over the years, but the idea behind them has remained remarkably consistent: jewellery should feel individual, be enjoyable to wear and add something special to an ordinary outfit.

Working with jewellery every day has taught me a great deal—not only about stones, colours and design, but about personal style and what customers really value.

Jewellery does not need to be quiet to be wearable

One of the biggest lessons I have learned is that bold jewellery and wearable jewellery are not opposites.

A large statement ring can look completely at home with jeans and a white shirt. A chunky necklace can transform a plain black dress or a simple jumper. Colourful earrings can brighten a neutral outfit without changing the person wearing it.

The key is balance. When a piece has plenty of character, the rest of the outfit does not need to work very hard. That is why I continue to love oversized stones, strong shapes, bold colour and jewellery that is a little different. These pieces may make an impact, but they can still become the things you reach for again and again.

Colour is far more personal than fashion suggests

Trends come and go, but customers are naturally drawn to colours that make them feel good. Some will always choose black, silver and classic neutrals. Others are happiest in bright red, emerald green, cobalt blue or a touch of glitter.

There is no correct choice.

Over the years, I have worked with natural gemstones, patterned stones, colourful finishes, ceramic beads, glass and animal prints. Each brings something different to a design. Agate may have soft bands and unexpected markings, while jasper can range from earthy and understated to wonderfully dramatic. Carnelian brings warmth, and glitter finishes have a completely different kind of energy.

I have learned not to underestimate colour—or the lift that one colourful piece of jewellery can give both an outfit and the person wearing it.

Natural stones refuse to be identical

Working with gemstones teaches you to appreciate variation. Two stones may share the same name, shape and size yet have completely different markings. One piece of agate might be softly clouded, another strongly banded. Jasper can look like a landscape, a brushstroke or an abstract pattern.

That individuality is not a fault to be corrected. It is part of what makes natural stone jewellery special.

Mass-produced perfection can be very uniform. Handmade gemstone jewellery has more personality. The challenge is to respect the stone rather than force every piece to look exactly like the one before it.

Comfort and practicality matter just as much as appearance

A piece of jewellery may look wonderful, but it also has to work in real life.

This is why details such as adjustable ring bands, a choice of necklace lengths and skin-friendly materials matter. An adjustable statement ring gives the wearer more flexibility and makes buying a ring online much easier. Different chain lengths allow a pendant to work with different necklines and body shapes.

Hypoallergenic, nickel-free jewellery suitable for sensitive skin is not simply a useful phrase in a product description. For many customers, it can determine whether a beautiful piece is actually something they are able to enjoy wearing.

Design is not only about the focal stone or the colour. It is also about how the finished piece feels, fits and becomes part of somebody’s everyday wardrobe.

Customers often know exactly what would make a piece right for them

Another lesson has been the value of listening. Sometimes a customer loves a design but would prefer it in a different finish. They may want a gemstone setting changed from silver to gold, a necklace made at another length or a particular colour that is not currently shown.

Where a custom request is possible, I will always try to make it happen.

Those conversations are useful because they show how personal jewellery really is. A small change can turn a piece someone admires into one that feels as though it was made specifically for them. Customer questions and requests also help shape the direction of future collections.

Handmade never means standing still

After more than ten years, I am still interested in new combinations. A familiar stone can look completely different in another setting. Changing the chain, scale or finish can alter the character of a pendant. Pairing jewellery with different clothes can reveal possibilities that were not obvious on the worktable.

Being handmade allows that flexibility. It leaves room to experiment, respond and create pieces with their own character rather than making everything look identical.

It also means continuing to learn. Materials behave differently, colours can surprise you and not every initial idea becomes the finished design. That process is part of the pleasure.

Confidence is the real finishing touch

Perhaps the most important thing I have learned is that jewellery changes when someone wears it.

The same oversized ring can feel dramatic on one person, elegant on another and playfully unconventional on somebody else. What matters is not whether it follows a rule, but whether the wearer feels like herself.

I do not believe statement jewellery should be saved for special occasions or worn only by certain people. If a piece brings colour to your day, finishes an outfit or simply makes you smile when you look at your hand, that is reason enough to wear it.

Ten years of making jewellery has confirmed what I suspected from the beginning: personal style should be personal. The best jewellery does not disguise who you are. It gives you another way to show it.
